We are dedicated to the health and happiness of pets and strive to give all animals a loving home.
Hoedspruit Paws was started by Jennifer Gorrie and Keli Stanissis, who have been dedicated to the health and happiness of pets since 2012. Abandoned or unwanted, ill or injured – they will do everything they possibly can to give each pet a healthy life in a happy home. "Hoedspruit Paws is a charity, so the more help you give us, the more help we can give animals" says Jennifer.
Hoedspruit Paws drives the Alley Cat initiative managed by Anri De Vos and her team of volunteers. Feral cats breed rapidly and can over-run a community if left unchecked. They also spread disease and take a toll on natural wildlife, especially breeding with African Wild Cats. The feral cats are captured and sterilized, before being released again. Paws also regularly assists with rabies vaccination drives and sterilization initiatives in the community and into neighboring communities.
Hoedspruit Paws strives to educate pet owners that animals are not mere possessions but loving and loyal companions. They are owed a happy, loving home, to be fed and cared for ... from its health to its well being. Even a working dog needs love and care. Education also includes reducing the number of unwanted litters and pets that are just abandoned. A pet is a commitment and should not just be given away.
Hoedspruit Paws is passionate about its sterilization drive. Each pet owner needs to sterilize their pets. Letting an animal have litter after unwanted litter is not fair to the animal, but also there are far too many unwanted and abandoned pets already. Adding to this is irresponsible and not fair to the animals that are regularly discarded. Unless you are a registered breeder, it is your duty to sterilize your pets.
Hoedspruit Paws aims to attend to the gap in the domestic animal care sector within the community. Through education and community drives, we aim to reduce the cause of life threatening diseases, such as rabies and canine distemper that occur in many rural communities, that not only endanger the animals and human life but also negatively affect the wildlife that so often surrounds these areas. Numerous cases of rabies have been reported locally and our vaccination program is top priority.
Hoedspruit Paws has a successful foster care network and strives to find suitable, loving homes for each animal that is given or dumped at Paws. Home checks are done and each animal placed is check on a few times. Every animal is sterilized before being homed and there is an adoption fee. Currently our kennels are a priority as we are overloaded with dogs and cats. A successful FOREVER HOME for each animal is our biggest goal.
Happy Animals
Hoedspruit Paws is a Non Profit Organisation based in the picturesque town of Hoedspruit, South Africa. It is our mission to make a difference to the lives of ordinary pets. We help find suitable homes for abandoned or unwanted pets, assist with food to those in need, sterilize all dogs and cats that we receive before re-homing, educate with regards to pet care, vaccinations and sterilization … and generally trying to improve the lives of animals in and around our community.
A Little Love
Hoedspruit Paws has made a difference to many neglected and abused dogs. Most of this work has been in surrounding rural areas, but also within our local community. We have come across many a horrific story and it is always heartbreaking to know that “Man’s Best Friend” is treated so disrespectfully. We aim to help each animal, however many a time it is necessary to end their misery, which is always a heart breaking thing to do. All animals are immediately taken to our Vet – Provet, upon evaluation a call is made as to how the animal will be treated and cared for. This is done through our many volunteer foster parents. Once back to health, the animal is found a Forever Home.
Prevent Litters
Hoedspruit Paws sterilizers every pet that it comes across. This is done through Provet which generously assists with dog and cat sterilization. There are far too many cats and dogs needing good homes for people to carry on breeding with their pets. Giving them away is not the answer as many land up in awful homes, being neglected, abused or suffering litter after litter. We are trying to educate our community about the importance of sterilization. Many people feel that it is not fair to the animal – this is however incorrect and it is far more beneficial for an animal to be spayed or neutered. It is your responsibility as a pet owner to do this. The Hoedspruit Alley Cat Initiative is also a vital part of the community as feral cats breed at an alarming rate and do mix with the indigenous African Wild cats, thereby reducing the purity of the breed.
Love Animals
Hoedspruit Paws would like to encourage all animal owners to “walk the Talk”. Love your pets, they love you unconditionally. Enjoy them for they can bring you plenty happiness. Respect and care for them as they are in your hands. Owning a pet is not a right, it is a privilege. A pet is not an object that can be discarded when the novelty wears off, it is a life, a living being and deserves to be treated as such.

Cats breed incredibly fast and we are always being given unwanted kittens. If you are looking for a loving pet that will make great company, please consider adopting a kitten or cat. Cats are independent, but love a soft bed to sleep on at night. All our cats are sterilized and there is an adoption fee.
Please call Anri if you would like to adopt a kitten or cat on 083 843 0331
To date Paws has adopted over 95% of all dogs that have come in. Every dog has been adopted to a loving home and are all thriving in their new lives. Many have come from heartbreaking backgrounds, so it is always rewarding to see them full of love and confidence. Home checks are done before any dog is placed into a new environment. All our dogs are sterilized before being re-homed.
